Nature Journaling - Two July Events

Nature Journaling
Monday, July 8, 2013
6:00 p.m.
Grote Hall Auditorium, UTC campus
Chattanooga TN
Free and open to the public

Mary Priestley, the curator of the Sewanee Herbarium, will present a program about Nature Journaling. In addition to her work with the Herbarium, Mary has also served as president of the Tennessee Native Plant Society (TNPS) and of the Friends of South Cumberland State Recreation Area; she has been a hike leader for the TNPS and for the Smoky Mountains Wildflower Pilgrimage.  May is also the author of Williams' Wildflowers, a children's book showcasing the wildflowers of the South Cumberland Plateau.

This will be a special opportunity to learn how to see nature in a new way.

The event is presented by the local Tennessee Valley Chapter of Wild Ones, an organization that supports natural landscaping using native plants.

Driving directions & parking: Drive east on E. 5th Street into the UTC campus; the cemetery will be on your left.  Pass the University Center and then Holt Hall on the right.  Just past Holt Hall, turn right into  Parking Lot 10 adjoining the Engineering, Math and Science Building (just before the intersection of 5th and Palmetto).  Drive toward the southwest end of that parking lot; Grote Hall will be ahead and on the right.  Park in the lot adjacent to Grote Hall.  Parking is free at this time of day

Painting with Liquid Pearls

Sunday, May 19, 2013
2:00-5:00 pm
Jewish Cultural Center
5461 North Terrace Dr.
Chattanooga TN

Jackie R. will be leading our May meeting.  We will use StazOn black inkpads or Memento Tuxedo black inkpad to stamp flowers, leaves, and such, then paint them with Liquid Pearls, which is a pearlescent acrylic paint.  We will also use the paint to create interesting textures and designs on paper.

These techniques can be used to create cards or decorative papers.

Jackie will be bringing many of the supplies needed, so we're asking that everyone contribute $1 or $2 or whatever you can to help out.

Please bring the following supplies:

  • Acrylic craft mat, if available (this is like a Silpat baking mat; you can ink, paint, glue, etc., on it and then just wipe it off)
  • Cold-press watercolor paper, if available
  • Any solid color card stock
  • Any printed color card stock you may wish to embellish
  • Water spritzer bottle, if available
  • Water (barrel) pens, if available
  • Fine tipped paintbrushes
  • Small cup for paint water or empty paint tray for blending
  • Adhesive of your choice for gluing down card stock, if desired
  • Any pre-made book you wish to embellish
  • Old newspapers to cover tables
For a preview of what we'll be doing, check out this video.

February 17, 2013 Meeting

Flag Books

Sunday, February 17, 2013
2:00-5:00 p.m.
Jewish Cultural Center
Chattanooga TN

At our next meeting, Stella and Ellen will lead demonstrations about making Flag Books.

Materials will be provided, but please bring the following with you if possible:

  • Card stock of various colors and patterns
  • Archival double stick tape
  • PVA glue or other adhesive
  • Ruler
  • Cutting mat
  • Straight edge cutter and/or scissors
  • Bone folder
  • If you'd like to experiment with repeating photos, please bring seven 8"x10" copies of one horizontal image copied on card stock, plus one sheet of 8"x16" paper (weight of construction paper) for the spine.

Originally developed by Hedi Kyle, the foundation of the deceptively simple Flag Book structure is an accordion folded spine. Rows of flags attached to opposing sides of each of the spine’s “mountain” folds allow the artist to fragment and layer a number of complementary or contrasting images and narratives. When read page by page, the viewer sees disjointed fragments of image and text. When the spine is pulled fully open, these fragments assemble a panoramic spread. This transformation is accompanied by a delightful flapping sound. The spine and covers provide opportunities for additional imagery.  For more imformation about this book form and to view some images of the amazing things you can do with Flag Books, visit http://www.philobiblon.com/flagbook/
