At our next meeting, Stella and Ellen will lead demonstrations about making Flag Books.
Materials will be provided, but please bring the following with you if possible:
- Card stock of various colors and patterns
- Archival double stick tape
- PVA glue or other adhesive
- Ruler
- Cutting mat
- Straight edge cutter and/or scissors
- Bone folder
- If you'd like to experiment with repeating photos, please bring seven 8"x10" copies of one horizontal image copied on card stock, plus one sheet of 8"x16" paper (weight of construction paper) for the spine.
Originally developed by Hedi Kyle, the foundation of the deceptively simple Flag Book structure is an accordion folded spine. Rows of flags attached to opposing sides of each of the spine’s “mountain” folds allow the artist to fragment and layer a number of complementary or contrasting images and narratives. When read page by page, the viewer sees disjointed fragments of image and text. When the spine is pulled fully open, these fragments assemble a panoramic spread. This transformation is accompanied by a delightful flapping sound. The spine and covers provide opportunities for additional imagery.
