  • Glue or other adhesive
  • Paper cutter, cutting mat, break-off knife
  • Scissors
  • Ribbon
  • Rubber stamps
Our meeting will be from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the Jewish Cultural Center.

October 14, 2012 Meeting

Please join us at the next meeting of the Chattanooga Book Arts Collaborative...
Sunday, October 14, 2013
2:00-5:00 p.m.
Jewish Cultural Center
Chattanooga TN

We will use our time at the meeting to make blank journals using coptic stitching (if you don't know how to do coptic stitching, we will show you how).  Most materials will be provided, and books will be donated to our collaborative project with the Creative Discovery Museum.

Please bring the following supplies if you have them available:
  • Awl
  • Binder's needles
  • Punching cradle
  • Bone folder
  • Scissors
  • Decorative paper for book covers and inside cover linings (this will be a good use for all that paper you've had for a long time, but didn't know what to do with it)
The Chattanooga Book Arts Collaborative has been invited to be a part of the "Helping Hands" exhibition at the Creative Discover Museum that runs from mid-November through January. CBAC members will be making 100 blank coptic-bound journals that will be used to gather stories from people about acts of kindness that have happened to them (don't let that number scare you... we already have quite a few journals ready to go... and we have another month to finish making the books).

Some of the blank journals will be in the CDM during the exhibition, so visitors can add their stories.  Another group of the journals will go to the Community Kitchen to collect stories about kindness.  The largest group of journals will be placed in random locations in the community (e.g., doctor's office waiting rooms, hospitals, car repair shops, businesses, etc.) along with instructions to write about an act of kindness, then pass along the journal to another person, and finally return the completed journal to the CDM.  The journal entries will be documented online as part of the 1001 Journals project, and the completed journals will be shown at the CDM at some point in the future.

Please come to learn about coptic binding....and be a part of this community project.

Be sure to check out our new Facebook page.

The Chattanooga Book Arts Collaborative will meet:
Sunday, September 23, 2012
2:00-5:00 p.m.
Jewish Cultural Center
For directions, see "CBAC Meetings" page

At the meeting, we will make a blank book using 2-needle coptic binding.  Coptic binding was originally developed in Egypt and was used from as early as the 2nd century to the 11th century.  In addition to its lovely appearance, the main advantage of this style of binding is that the book will open and lie flat.

Please bring the following supplies with you:

  • 2 pieces of book board- 5-3/4" h x 4-1/2"w each
  • Paper for the outside cover of your book - 2 sheets, 7"h x 5-1/4"w
  • Paper to line the cover - 2 sheets 5-1/4"h x 4-1/4"w
  • Text weight paper for the pages - 40-50 sheets, cut to 5-1/2"h x 8-1/2"
  • 2 binders needles (binders' needles have a slightly duller point than regular needles)
  • PVA glue
  • Glue brush
  • Bone folder
  • Awl
  • Cutting Mat
  • Scissors
  • Waxed linen thread

If you don't have waxed linen thread, there will be plenty to share at the meeting.

At this meeting, we will also be talking about plans for future CBAC meetings, workshops, community activities, and more.  Please bring ideas and suggestions...or just come and participate.

If you have any questions, please email Nora at nsbernhardt@gmail.com.

Bring the following supplies with you to the meeting:

Cover material:

For a paper cover: Two sheets of heavyweight paper, cut 5-1/2” high x 8-1/2”wide

OR

For a hard cover using book board:
  • Three pieces of book board, cut to the following sizes: 6”h x 1”w;  6”h x 7-1/2”w;  and 6”h x 8-3/4”w
  • Paper or book cloth to cover the outside of book – 2 sheets cut to 7-1/2” high x  10” wide
  • Paper to line the covers – 2 sheets cut to 5-1/2” high x 8-1/2” wide

Pages:
