We will be making books using the Japanese Stab Binding
technique. Some examples of books using this technique are shown below. For inspiration and to see a variety of
styles, google “Japanese Stab Binding Images.”
Bring the following supplies with you to the meeting:
Cover material:
For a paper cover: Two
sheets of heavyweight paper, cut 5-1/2” high x 8-1/2”wide
OR
For a hard cover using book
board:
- Three pieces of book board, cut to the following sizes: 6”h x 1”w; 6”h x 7-1/2”w; and 6”h x 8-3/4”w
- Paper or book cloth to cover the outside of book – 2 sheets cut to 7-1/2” high x 10” wide
- Paper to line the covers – 2 sheets cut to 5-1/2” high x 8-1/2” wide
- If you are comfortable covering and lining your covers in advance, please feel free to do so. The larger piece of board (6"h x 8-3/4"w) is for the back cover. The two smaller pieces of book board are used for the front cover, with the narrow piece (6"h x 1"w) on the left, a 1/4” space, and then the 6”h x 7-1/2”w piece - covered with a single sheet of paper or book cloth.
Pages:
- 20-30 sheets of paper (plain or decorated) cut to 5-1/2” wide x 8-12” wide. If you have words or content on the pages, be sure to leave a 1” margin on the left side of each sheet.
OR
- If you are participating in the collaborative project, bring the 18 pages you have created. At the meeting, you will exchange pages with the others participating in the project.
