Come to inspire and be inspired by book art!

Chattanooga Book Arts Collaborative monthly meeting
Sunday, February 20, 2011
2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Create Here

55 East Main Street
Chattanooga TN

At the 2nd meeting of the Chattanooga Book Arts Collaborative, we will devote a block of time to sharing our own creations.  Please bring books that you have made, recent or otherwise.  If you were able to attend the January CBAC meeting, be sure to bring the book you made during the meeting too ... and anything you’ve made since that time using the long-stitch binding method.  If you’re new to book arts, that’s okay … just come and enjoy.  We are sure to see quite a range books that will be sure to inspire you.

At the meeting, we will also learn a simple, folded, non-glued book structure.  Several of our members will demonstrate what we call the “male-female” book form.

Please bring the following supplies:
  • A bone folder
  • Scissors
  • At least 20-30 sheets of paper (cardstock is good, but avoid thin, flimsy paper), cut in rectangles twice as wide as high, e.g. 2”x 4” but no larger than 3”x6”.  This paper can be solid colors…or not.  It can be pieces of watercolor paintings, paste paper, photographs, cut-up greeting cards, sheets of paper on which you’ve written words, old letters, old books, concert tickets, recycled paper… anything that you don’t mind folding and cutting.
For questions, email Nora at nsbernhardt@aol.com.

All Chattanooga Book Arts Collaborative meetings are ont the third Sunday of each month, from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.

January 16, 2011 Long-Stitch Binding Workshop

Come and learn about the art of book making!
Sunday, January 16, 2011
2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Create Here, 55 East Main Street, Chattanooga TN

There are many ways to bind a book, but long stitch binding can be one of the most beautiful.  In this method, pages are sewn together with long stitches through the book spine, which allows for the opportunity to add decorative flourishes.

Nora Bernhardt, book artist and founder of CBAC, will discuss this technique and lead the workshop in making a long stitch book.

Supply list (bring these materials with you to the workshop):
  1. Cover material: 2 pieces of book board or matte board, cut to 5-3/4" x 4-3/8"
  2. Spine material: 1 piece of book board or matte board, cut to 5-3/4" x 3/4"
  3. Covering for the outside of the book: 1 sheet of bookcloth or decorative paper, cut to 8" x  12"
  4. Contrasting covering for the spine (optional): 1 sheet of bookcloth or decorative paper, cut to 8" x 2-1/2"
  5. Paper to line the inside covers of the book: 1 sheet of decorative or solid paper, cut to 5-1/2" x 9-1/4"
  6. Pages material: 24 sheets of paper, cut to 5-1/2" x 8-1/2
  7. Waxed linen thread or narrow ribbon, and a needle large enough to accomodate your thread or ribbon
  8. Cutting mat, scissors; bone folder (preferably teflon); awl; break-off knife; PVA or Lineco glue; glue brush; metal ruler; paper towels or a rag.
Kits with cover materials, interior pages and waxed thread (items 1-7 above) will be available ($5).

For those new to book making, bone folders, awls, needles, glue, and glue brushes will be available for use during the workshop.  All supplies can be purchased at Art Creations, 201 Frazier Ave., Chattanooga.

Since this is our first meeting and we want to have sufficient space and supplies for everyone, please email Nora (nsbernhardt@aol.com) in advance if you plan to attend.
